Lyme disease is a complex, multi-system illness caused by the bacterium Borrelia Burgdorferi. According to the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), 43 states in the United States are home to black-legged ticks. Black-legged ticks are also found throughout South America, Europe, northern Asia, and northern Africa. More than 300,000 new cases of Lyme disease are estimated to occur each year in the United States alone. Symptoms are wide-ranging and can include chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or IBS, joint pain, neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, headaches, and memory issues, as well as psycho-emotional symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Lyme disease can also affect hormone function, leading to weight changes, hair loss, and reproductive issues. Although the target-shaped erythema migrans (EM) rash is considered classic to Lyme disease, it is only reported in about 9% of cases, and the absence of the rash does not rule out Lyme disease. Furthermore, at least 30% of adults living in the U.S. with Lyme disease never recall a tick bite.
