Q&A On Phosphatidylcholine (PC) Therapy

Phosphatidylcholine therapy

What is Phosphatidylcholine (PC)?

Phosphatidylcholine is a phospholipid molecular that dissolves in fat and in water, meaning it can aid in the absorption of fats after eating. In other words, PC is an emulsifier, and is present in lecithin, a common food ingredient used to help mix water and fat (think chocolate!). Additionally, PC aids in bile production and the elimination of fat-soluble toxins from the body.

How can Phosphatidylcholine help our cognitive function & liver detox?

Phosphatidylcholine given intravenously has shown to be an effective and low-risk approach to reduce neuroinflammation and toxicity. Walter Crinion, a naturopathic doctor and one of the pioneers in environmental medicine, used to say, “the solution to pollution is dilution.” One of the main ways to reduce toxicity and inflammation is by slowly incorporating healthy substrates into the body, which gently pull out the “bad stuff.”

Phosphatidylcholine is not only critical for building cell membranes and nerves in the nervous system of the brain/heart/gut, etc. but also essential to produce bile in the liver – the main avenue for detoxification in the GI tract. Often with neuroinflammation and toxicity, there is what traditional Chinese Medicine would call “liver stagnation” due to impaired detoxification whereby bile moves like sludge or molasses and requires lubrication – phosphatidylcholine can help move things along and safely improve detoxification and inflammation.

What are some other benefits of Phosphatidylcholine?

We love phosphatidylcholine because it also stabilizes cell membranes and can support optimal neuronal (brain cell) function. We find it improves sleep quality, reduces anxiety, and decreases neurological inflammation. Additionally, it has been scientifically shown to increase the population of healthy neurons and improve neuronal plasticity in vitro. Thus, it can be quite helpful for the brain and the liver, the two organs we most commonly see affected by chronic environmental illness.

What does detox have to do with neuroinflammation & liver function?

Since many substances that are damaging to the brain (such as mold/mycotoxins, heavy metals, and environmental toxins) are fat-soluble and our brains are almost 60% fat by weight, it is no wonder that fat-based therapies like phosphatidylcholine can be highly effective in reducing neuro-inflammation, lowering toxic burden, and improving the blood-brain barrier.

What happens when our liver gets sluggish?

Our liver, along with our kidneys, is responsible for filtering blood and removing waste products. Our bodies have developed the ability to metabolize and excrete the toxic waste products made by our own cells, however, the dramatic increase in the amounts of new, foreign molecules (called xenobiotics) in the last 100 years means our bodies are working very hard to keep our blood clean. If we have genetic issues affecting our ability to detox or have severe environmental toxin exposures (such as mold toxins, industrial or agricultural chemicals, and/or heavy metals), our liver’s ability to manage these becomes impaired, and this can lead to deficiencies in certain nutrients that are essential for healthy detoxification.
